erger spent about $100,000 to buy and decorate the old Showboat Theater, the club's present quarters. Although he wasn't certain on Dec. 30 if the club would open New Year's Eve, word circulated among gays that it was ready and 1,400 people showed up. "The place was really kin'," Berger
says.
Since he was 14, Berger has been operating at high speed. At this young age he was billed as "The Wizard," and performed a magic act around northeastern Ohio for $50 a show.
Shortly after his father was killed in Vietnam in 1966, he quit school to work on a 52-foot yacht owned by the late Glenn Liebner, executive of the Cleveland Lithograph Co. The job entailed serving Liebner's friends and clients, a role that prepared him for his nightly chores at Traxx. "I fixed the drinks, steered the boat and generally made people comfortable," he said.
